From Rural Punjab to Global Soil Science: heartfelt stories

Dr. M.S. Brar

I was born and raised in Punjab, where life was simple, resources were limited, and hard work was a way of life.

From cycling to school through rain, heat, and fog to representing India at international scientific forums across the world, my journey has been shaped by perseverance, education, discipline, and the support of countless people who guided me along the way.

As a teacher, researcher, and soil scientist, I spent more than three decades working in agricultural education and research. I had the privilege of teaching students, conducting scientific work, publishing research, participating in international conferences, and learning from people and cultures across many countries. Yet, beyond professional achievements, life taught me lessons that no classroom or laboratory alone could teach — humility, patience, gratitude, and the importance of staying grounded.

I have always believed that education is not only meant to build careers, but also to build character and purpose. Whatever little success I achieved came not from shortcuts, but from consistency, honesty, curiosity, and a willingness to keep learning at every stage of life.

Today’s youth live in a world full of opportunities, but also distractions and pressure.

Through my experiences, I hope young people understand that meaningful success does not happen overnight. It is built slowly through hard work, resilience, and the courage to continue even during uncertain times.

I have tried to share my life journey not as a story of achievements, but as a collection of experiences, struggles, travels, lessons, and memories that shaped me as a person.

If my life’s journey helps even one person believe in honesty, perseverance, humility, and purposeful living, I will consider this effort truly meaningful.

I have penned down these life stories, experiences, and lessons in both Punjabi and English.

The Impact

Through teaching, research, travel, and life experiences, I have learned that true success is not measured only by awards or positions, but by the positive difference we make in the lives of others.

My journey from the fields of Punjab to international scientific platforms taught me the value of hard work, humility, discipline, and lifelong learning.

I believe today’s youth possess immense potential, but success requires patience, perseverance, strong values, and the courage to continue moving forward during difficult times.

Through these stories and experiences, I hope to encourage younger generations to stay grounded, continue learning, respect their roots, and move through life with honesty, courage, and purpose.

Every journey leaves behind experiences worth sharing, and every struggle leaves behind lessons worth preserving.
